The Government continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to sustainability, innovation and climate resilience through a broad range of tax and fiscal incentives designed to encourage investment in renewable energy. These measures help
reduce upfront costs, attract private sector participation and support Fiji’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
Accelerated Allowance for Renewable Energy Plant and Water Storage Facilities
Taxpayers may apply to claim a 100% tax write-off in the year the expenditure is incurred for capital costs relating to the installation of a renewable energy plant or water storage facility. This applies to businesses investing in:
- biofuel generators
- solar water pumps
- hydropower systems
- wind, wave and solar technology
- water storage facilities.
- Provisional approval must be obtained before the project begins. Final approval is granted once the project is completed, after which the qualifying capital expenditure may be claimed as an allowable deduction.
Exempt Income for New Renewable Energy Activities
To encourage new investment and innovation in the energy sector, income earned
from a new renewable energy project or power cogeneration activity may be exempt
from income tax for up to 10 years, subject to approval by the CEO.
This long-term tax relief improves project viability, increases investor confidence
and supports the growth of commercially sustainable renewable energy ventures.
Research and Development Incentive
A company may claim a deduction of 250% of eligible expenses incurred on research and development in:
- Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
- renewable energy industries.
This incentive supports innovation, skills development and the creation of advanced
technologies that improve productivity and environmental outcomes.
VAT Refund for Residential Solar Projects
Individuals may qualify for VAT refunds on capital investment for residential solar projects. This does not include:
- solar water heaters
- standalone solar lighting systems.
This measure helps households lower energy costs while supporting cleaner energy
use and stronger energy resilience.
Duty Concession on Renewable Energy Goods
Companies and entities importing approved renewable energy goods may qualify for Duty Concession Code 264, which provides:
- Fiscal Duty Free
- Import Excise Free
- VAT concessions where applicable.
This helps lower the cost of importing renewable energy equipment and encourages
wider adoption of clean technologies.
Carbon Trading
Income earned by businesses engaged in carbon trading activities is exempt from income tax. This supports participation in emerging carbon markets and encourages environmentally sustainable business opportunities.
Supporting a Greener Future
These incentives reflect the Government’s commitment to building a competitive, innovation-driven and environmentally sustainable economy. By reducing financial barriers and providing long-term tax certainty, the framework enables businesses
and individuals to play an active role in expanding renewable energy, strengthening energy security and advancing national climate goals.
