Progress Update on FRCS Tax Crimes Taskforce Activities
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) is pleased to update the public on the ongoing work of the FRCS Tax Crimes Taskforce, a multi-agency initiative dedicated to combatting serious tax evasion and protecting public revenue.
- Referral of Cases for Prosecution: Several significant cases have been formally referred to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) for prosecution. One involves a complex VAT fraud scheme, and the others concerns individual falsely acting as tax agents and submitting fraudulent tax returns.
- Multi-Agency Coordination: The Taskforce is working closely with enforcement and regulatory partners, including the Fiji Police Force, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and FICAC. Monthly coordination meetings are now being held to track the progress of referred cases and ensure efficient joint enforcement.
- Targeting Complex Schemes: Active investigations are underway into cases involving undeclared income, false invoicing, use of shell companies, and concealment of assets and related red flag indicators. These are being reviewed collaboratively with partner agencies Enforcement Under a Broader Legal Framework:The Taskforce will also utilise powers under the Proceeds of Crime Act and other relevant laws to ensure that the full force of the law is applied in pursuing tax crime offenders. This includes recovering illicit gains and prosecuting those involved in serious financial misconduct.
- Strengthening Compliance Frameworks: The Taskforce is working to enhance FRCS’s legislative and institutional capacity, improve detection through data analytics, and expand compliance programs targeting all taxpayer segments—from individuals to multinational corporations.
The Taskforce reaffirms its commitment to upholding integrity and fairness in Fiji’s tax system. Members of the public who are aware of tax evasion or financial misconduct cases are encouraged to report their concerns in confidence via the FRCS Whistleblower Platform at: wbinfo@frcs.org.fj
All reports will be investigated thoroughly, and where warranted, offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
