Three appear in Court

Three (3) employees of Carpenters Properties Fiji Ltd have been charged by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) for obstructing and removing Tax Officers from the MHCC Complex last month.

Complex Manager, Kratika Karti Kumar and Security Officers, Joeli Tikomaiqameya and Sakiusa Bulivorovoro appeared before Magistrate Liyange Wickramasekera in the Suva Magistrate Court this morning.

“The accused on 3rd July, 2017 at the MHCC Complex obstructed two Revenue & Customs Tax Officers by stopping and removing them from the shopping complex, thus preventing the Officers from performing their duties under the Tax Law, namely the Value Added Tax Act of 1991 and the Income Tax Act of 2015. This is a clear breach of Section 54 of the Tax Administration Act of 2009,” Revenue & Customs Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Visvanath Das said.

Mr. Das reiterated the consequences of obstructing tax officers while they perform their duties under the Tax Administration Act.

“Obstructing a Revenue & Customs officer is a serious offence under the Tax Administration Act and attracts a fine of up to $25,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 24 months or both,” Mr, Das said.

“We have always offered assistance to businesses with their Tax and Customs issues and we expect businesses to co‐operate with our officers during site visits,” he said.

The matter will be called for mention on the 26th of September 2017.
